Ferns, Grasses & Bamboo

  • Learn More About Ferns, Grasses & Bamboo

Ferns, grasses, and bamboo are all plants used to decorate any of your home and living spaces both in and around the house, but in different ways. Ferns are plants with lush, feathery leaves that grow in humid areas, while decorative grasses tend to have long, narrow stems and many blades. Some grasses may also have wispy tops, like pampas grass or fountain grass. Bamboo is a fast-growing plant that stands out with its sturdy, hollow stems, vibrant green color, and thin, blade-like leaves.

Use decorative ferns as a lush underbrush to decorate low spaces or hang them up high to let their elegant foliage hang down. Depending on the types of ferns you like most, you may want to hang them in macrame plant hangers or decorative baskets, create mini indoor gardens with ferns in glass terrariums, or place potted ferns on tables or shelves. You can plant ferns in decorative containers like vases or pots and see them thrive in humid spaces like bathrooms. Most ferns are evergreen, meaning they stay green all year around, so you can add ferns anywhere you want to add a year-long touch of refreshing and calming foliage.

To decorate with grasses, choose which types of grasses you like best and consider where you want to use them. For some ideas, you can place cut grasses in vases or containers as striking centerpieces, create wall hangings with dried grasses to texture a wall, or plant ornamental grasses in pots or garden spaces. Tall grasses on the floor are excellent ways to fill corner spaces, place them beside a side table as an accent, or hide imperfections in a wall with their fluffy tops. To add a natural look to your outdoor spaces, use landscape grasses or incorporate wild grasses into floral arrangements, wreaths, and wall hangings for a natural and wildflower-inspired look.

The bamboo plant is a favorite among homes as it adds small touches of tranquility both indoors and outdoors. Bamboo trees can grow tall quickly, but you can also use small bamboo stalks in pots—sometimes called lucky bamboo—to decorate tables, shelves, or desks or use large bamboo palm plants to fill empty corners in the living room or bedroom with their lush foliage. Create a soothing atmosphere outside by planting a small bamboo garden with a water feature for an easy, zen backyard. If you have a space you want to cover up, you can use many tall bamboo stalks outdoors as screens or fence-like dividers for privacy.
